unfinished project. I have to work out what i'm doing with this stuff. they were originally to be put together in some kind of modern day hogarth style scene. but then i remembered the schwepps adverts had already done this. apologies for lack of postings

been a hectic few months, but very exciting, and here's some of the work i've been doing for a childrens book i wrote called 'the adventures of bill thomas' about a merry-go-round horse who has lived on the fair in the city all his life, but has an urge to find the countryside and sets off on adventure to find the seaside, meeting lots of new friends on the way of course...

some of this is with the text, some of it is without the text. it's also not in order i don't think. hopefully i will have a proper version up soon

this is one of my favourite stories about a group of women who want to become more romantic, and they are at this group thing with this woman teaching them about the space in front of there faces and it's relation to everything in their lives, and i think it's a powerful image, so i did some prep drawings for this to

there is this sad, funny moment in the first story called 'the patio' where her neighbour has a fit and she just falls asleep, but it's all amidst her fantasizing about him being in love with her

there is this story about two old men called 'the sister' and one of the men thinks he is going to meet his friends sister, and most of the book is about him going to meet the sister, but he never sees her, and it ends with the two men having sex, because the friend is actually in love with the man, and doesn't even have a sister. so i used perrie and matt to pose a bit for this

this is my favourite picture i drew, i am definitely going to use this in the final paintings but make the floor much bigger, to bring out the feeling of isolation more. it's just the moment in a story when she figures out her girlfriend is having an affair, but i also want to include the other two girls, but far on the other side of the page from the main girl

there is this beautifully sad quote in the napkin face story, it says something like - theresa was sat on the floor next to the chair. we've all been there, chairs are for people and your not sure if you are one -

i did some other drawings, of space and objects and stuff, but they are mostly just quick sketches, but all have helped me to understand the book better, and highlighted the themes. really, i think i didn't concentrate on the important bits of the book enough, and just got carried away with drawing people

theatre

in my attempt to research and document better i am trying to remember to write about art shows and exhibitions i see and cinema and theatre, but i keep forgetting. also i want this blog to be informal therefore i appologise for the quality of my writing. i can't be bothered to be too serious, i'm not a very serious person, these are more like notes NOTES oh wonderful notes, maybe now i will be abe to remember what i do with myself

well

usually the only theatre i see is where i work a the old red lion theatre pub in angel. last month i saw a play called 'nevermind' which i enjoyed. it was about a man coming to terms with the loss of his father and the relationship he had with his depressed mother. he was a struggling writer and was writing a biography about kurt cobain, but he was taking drugs and seeing old kurt, and kurt wasn't too good for his mind as you can imagine. it was one of the best plays i've seen in along time. the acting from the main guy and the woman who played the mother was brilliant. the girl from My Family was in it but she was a bit 'tv'. very cute though. it was well directed and generally a very well rounded and satisfying peice. the set was average. it was just a wonderfully written play and it explored some very interesting relationships and feelings, without being cliche or obvious.
This play however, Damages, i saw last week, is a bit fresher in my mind, unfortunately. it was rubbish, i didn't like it. it had an awful pace. it was very fast with little stucture and i was left wondering what the point of it was. it was set in an newspaper tabloid office, and involved a scandal so boring i can't bear to repeat it. stuff to do with the way the news is today, celebrity, boobs and rubbish, instead of actual news. but, really it was tedious. the first haf was so poor my brother wouldn't even come back for the second half. i braved it out with shep though and it did improve. it was probably worth seeing just for the marvelous preformance by the older gentleman who played the night editor. He acted very well and hi part was written superbly, you really believed everthing he said and he was very funny and sweet. The rest of the acting was pitiful though. very poor. esspecailly from the main guy who i believe also directed the play. laughable really. his directing wasn't bad i suppose. the main problem i had with the play was the fact that the subject just wasn't suited to a fringe peice. it might have made a good book. well anyway i can't be bothered wasting my thoughts on this much more.

i also went to the ra summer exhibition last week, which i enjoyed more than last years. it's still a load of rubbish but some of it is nice rubbish. i mostly like going just to see the room with all the little drawings all up the walls. how nice.

and i went to a sculpture show in peckham on the roof of the multistory, which was so sweet. it was nice up there, i can't remember the sculpture though because the sunset was so nice

i also saw harry potter last night which i enjoyed, i thought it was the best yet apart from the first one. it was very funny. and last week i saw public enmey which was wonderful, the most beautiful scenes i have seen in a long time, just beautiful, everything about it was beautiful. and i discovered that i absoluely love annie hall, which i watched for the first time this week. amazing film, very very funny

i watched the extra's on the science of sleep dvd, the interview with laurie who makes the things they animated in the film and she said that michel gondry told her that an idea is no good unless it's verging on stupid, which i liked

Things i have found out about clive:

Object 3 - Balloon Project

YET again, have failed to scan the images. Terrible bad bad quality photography.

Am really pleased with the outcome I produced for the final part of the Object project. Feel that I managed to create a fun, refreshing sequence of images, and am pleased with my experimentation with media - the mark-making and paint techniques i used beside the more detailed fine pencil lines of the characters and background.

And i made up the poem, which was quite fun.

So the story of poor solomon goes like this

Oh Solomon, he was a clever chap,

He had a plan to sail across the map,

In a mighty fine hot air ride,

It's holes and faults he tried to hide,

As the world watched in expectation,

And with all the pressure from his nation,

Poor Solomon, up he had to go,

To sail across the ice and snow,

But the lives of him and his crew,

Were to be cut short he thought he knew,

And so it happened one cold day,

Down it came and finally it lay,

On the icey ground all alone,

The three men were forced to roam,

Until they succumbed to their frosty fate,

Oh Solomon, what have you done mate?

Razz My Berries

A picture from the group exhibition I took part of over the weekend. I showed four images, and they were hung on this wall with lots of others. Looked good, although I don't think they were strong enough to be hung with this amount of work, and I had made them as a set of six. The curators didn't show the two I was most pleased with, which was odd I guess. But anyway, it was exciting to be in an exhibition even with a small amount of work. An experience I think.

Other work of mine has been put back up in the Cafe 'Bliss' in Angel. It's been up for a while, but they just re-decorated and some customers told him they missed the work so it got re-hung, and it looks quite professional now. Although it's old (last summer - camdan passage portraits), I am still pleased with how it looks and that people enjoy it.

The Object project was quite enjoyable. It was really useful to help with understanding the best ways to research. I really enjoyed going to draw from real life ( The V&A, The Science Museum, The Design Museum) and I used the library a lot and the internet. Trying to find interesting things to draw was a bit tedious - and trying to do 60 images was very difficult. I think I spent too much time trying to make every one look good so I only managed half.

I think that this week hasn't helped my brain too much though. I was already good at drawing facts, drawing from picture references etc, I needed to work on my imagination, and now that we have to do that for the next half of the project I'm struggling - I need to get back into the practice of thinking!

In terms of what I produced - I was please with some of the drawings. I liked that I tried to mix up the style a bit but still bringing them all together by using the same colours and pencils. I wasn't very please with how I laid it out - everyone else seemed to have done them all on seperate pieces of paper, but Iain said it worked well. He said that all the drawings put together looked very strong.
